So Senator Harry Reid is so worried about polygamy that he’s willing to write a special law which turns the feds loose on a bunch of folks who want more than one wife.
This, of course, while he’s roadblocking a Senate vote on allowing drilling for oil in Alaska and off the coasts of the United States.
Obviously, the activity of a very small group of folks is of much greater importance than increasing our energy supply.
OK, let’s talk polygamy and Senator Claghorn.
First, not everyone who has two or more "wives" is a criminal. There are people who genuinely believe that is what God wants them to do and if it happens between consenting adults and there is only one "legal" marriage and if they are not abusing our welfare system, than nobody should care. Certainly not Senator Claghorn’s gay and lesbian friends whose rights he so assiduously protects in his capacity as California’s third Senator.
Now then, there is another group of "polygamists" whose antics are not portrayed by HBO’s filmmakers.
This is the group represented by people like Warren Jeffs who, we agree with Senator Claghorn, are criminals.
Using religion as an excuse to have sex with multiple underage girls is clearly beyond societal norms.
And the FLDS people I have covered in Colorado City, AZ and Hilldale, UT clearly fall into the category of organized crime.
So, if Senator Claghorn was really concerned about it, he would point out that we already have plenty of laws on the books to deal with such activities.
For starters, there’s the Mann Act which makes it illegal to take someone across state lines for the purpose of certain sex acts. Since we know that young women were taken to a hotel in Caliente, NV from Hilldale UT, I’m guessing that the Mann Act already applies here.
And then, there’s the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, commonly known as RICO. This law was passed to bring the mob to its knees and it did. It has been used to prosecute everyone from the Latin Kings to the Gambino crime family.
But you see, Senator Claghorn also wants to give out grant money to "help" victims of polygamy in addition to passing new laws which say the same thing as those already on the books.
Why is Senator Claghorn so interested in polygamy this week?
Well, as Mitt Romney so eloquently put it, "the reason 29 per cent of America won’t vote for a Morman is that they think they’re voting for Harry Reid."
Senator Claghorn has two reasons for this sudden interest.
First, to take the heat off his ridicules anti-oil drilling position. And, second, he has this fantasy that somehow all of the recent publicity caused by the arrest and trial of Warren Jeffs has negatively impacted the Morman church, of which he is a member.
That’s typical of the Senator. He really does think we’re that dumb.
So, if we were to proceed down this path, what’s next? Government grants for the victims of Muslim "honor" killings?
And while we’re at it, how about a federal task force to find the remaining Nazis who escaped to the United States and are living out their days here?
So let’s add this up.
Our very own Senator "coal makes us sick" Claghorn is for gay rights but against polygamy. He wants to pass laws, which would have the effect of those that are already on the books. And he wants to give away federal play money to "victims" of polygamy.
But he doesn’t want to allow the Senate to even VOTE on drilling for more oil.
Aren’t you proud of your senior Senator today?
