Jim Gibbons’ first act as Governor which can really affect our lives is not encouraging.
Appointing Lawrence Weekly to replace Yvonne Gates on the Clark County Commission – said in our understated way – may well not have been the wisest choice he could have made.
Weekly, who we found it necessary to call either a crook or a schmuck on this page in late 2004, is the current Fifth Ward Heeler on the Las Vegas City Council which is the AA farm club for the County Commission.
If Gibbons was under pressure to appoint a black Commissioner, surely he could have found a more conservative black Democrat than Weekly.
Perhaps one who has actually held a real job in the private sector.
Weekly is cut in the mold of every other race baiting poverty pimp who has had ethics problems in Las Vegas during past 10 years. Names like Williams, McDonald and Gates come to mind here.
Our problem with Weekly stems from his willingness to stop a 28story condominium development on the corner of Alta and Martin Luther King back in 2004.
Somebody in a neighborhood far, far away was worried about the height.
These condos would have had an awesome view of Interstate 15’s traffic jams but they would have been priced significantly less than those with strip views.
Never mind the potential additional tax base in a, shall we say, economically challenged neighborhood.
Never mind that the developer was willing to spend his own money and there was no government subsidy involved.
Somebody didn’t like the concept of taking an empty lot in a reasonably bad neighborhood and building a nice development and there was Weekly, the City Councilman, stopping it from being built.
In fact, not only did he stop it but he said that he was upset because apparently the city staffer involved (who resigned under pressure) and the developer did not have the proper respect for his exalted position as the controller of everything which happens in the fifth ward.
That lot is still empty, a tribute to Weekly’s business acumen.
On the other hand, Weekly was willing to piss away lots of city subsidy money to get a grocery chain to build in a West Las Vegas neighborhood irrespective of the fact that a very well run supermarket chain could not make a profit there.
So on one hand, this is a guy who is willing to kill a development being built in an ugly neighborhood with private money and on the other hand he wants to throw public money at a grocer who doesn’t want to move into an ugly neighborhood.
He should fit right in on the County Commission, where his ethically challenged predecessor left off.
And we, the citizens of Clark County get a commissioner who will never hesitate to spend our money where it is not needed.
Thank you Governor Gibbons.
Are there no conservative, black Democrats living in that district?
Did the Governor think about the long-term ramifications of having someone like Weekly on the Commission?
Or did he cut a deal with the NAACP’s more radical elements?
Looking inside this Governor’s mind can be difficult.
But if this is conservatism at work, we were right during the primary season when we opined that a Gibbons term would simply be an extension of Kenny Guinn and Bob Miller.
All hat and no cattle.
